Attendance & Punctuality

Expected attendance level:
Children are expected to be in school every day. Under Section 36 of the Education Act 1944, parents of children of compulsory school age are required to ensure that they receive full-time education. Parents have a legal responsibility to get their child to school regularly which is deemed by the government to mean at least 96%, any statistic lower than this is considered to be inadequate.

If it falls below 90% the Education Welfare Officer will be notified and appropriate action will be taken. Attendance is monitored very closely on a weekly basis. If a child’s absence does fall below this level they are considered to be persistently absent or severely absent if it falls under 50%. It is parents’ responsibility to inform schools of the reason for a child’s absence as soon as possible by calling or emailing the school office by 9 am each day. We also ask that ALL medical appointments are made before and after school.

Children must be in school on time, this means standing in their class line in the school playground by 8.45am ready to be picked up by the class teacher. When a child arrives late for school, they miss the introduction to the day and valuable learning time such as Phonics lessons and Morning Challenges. It is also vital that children are collected on time at the end of the day. Being late for school and being picked up late can also be very distressing for the child. Punctuality is monitored very closely on a weekly basis.
